About us

The history of Kooijman Autar

Our clients include several families who have entrusted their legal business to us for three generations or more. They do so on the basis of our long-established reputation as a pillar of the Rotterdam community, and because we are very good at what we do.

The name Kooijman has been associated with our practice since 1947, the year in which Pieter Kooijman was appointed to the office of notary. He was succeeded by Jan Kooijman. Our colleague Peter Kooijman is the third generation of his family to be involved in the practice as notary.

However, the deeds and documents for which Kooijman Autar Notarissen is responsible go much farther back in time. The earliest dates from 1869, when the first predecessor of one of our current notaries took up his position.

When the founders of our firm were active, all deeds were handwritten using pen and ink. Those days are, of course, long gone. Wherever possible, we take advantage of modern technology to ensure that we can do our work as efficiently as possible. Just as quill pens have given way to the computer, the nature of our work has also changed. In the past, the focus was the deed or contract itself. Today, ever more of our time is devoted to providing advice which helps our clients to minimize their tax liability or avoid costly legal proceedings. Our advice may result in the production of a formal deed or document, but this is not necessarily the case.

We have made ongoing investments in the development of new products and services, and we shall continue to do so in future. In recent years we have been at the forefront of developments in such areas as the transfer of beneficial ownership, escrow services, advance directives and lasting powers of attorney, and the digital safe, to name but a few.

Based on our success in reducing clients’ tax liability and helping them to avoid costly legal proceedings, we can count many notable companies and their owners or directors among our loyal clientele. We also assist many private individuals, in the Netherlands and elsewhere, who are keen to maximize tax efficiency and preclude potential difficulties.

Our offices are staffed by four notaries, six junior notaries, two notary clerks/paralegals and over twenty other professionals. This expert team is on hand to meet your every requirement, both today and in the future. We look forward to meeting you.
